What's over 500 years old and has been in training since 1610 A.D.?

If you answered, "...a five needle pine in miniature form" you would be correct! (It is considered to be the oldest bonsai tree in the world!)

This Bonsai tree art has been around since Egyptian times (about 4000 B.C.) but was developed by the Chinese and called 'Penzai'. This was around 265 A.D. but the art spread throughout Asia and eventually, around the 1800's, the Japanese adapted the Chinese word to 'Bonsai'.

It started in Japan as a pastime for the wealthy and usually involved the azalea bonsai tree or small maple bonsai trees. Pine bonsai trees, of course were also favored.

Nowadays this bonsai art is available for all to try, especially if you have patience, time and some special skills.

In the western culture, of course, we refer to 'Bonsai' as any or all types of miniature trees in containers.
