If you have recently moved to the desert southwest, you are probably already keenly aware that gardening is different in this part of the country. The climate is decidedly arid; and water, which has always been a scarce commodity, is at an even premium now that population levels are fast approaching the saturation point. Responsible homeowners have learned to garden responsibly, using xeriscaping techniques to create a yard with real southwestern style and panache. Here are some of the basics. Understanding The Concept Xeriscape Landscape Design:![]() A Xeriscape garden with drought tolerant plants
Many people mistakenly assume that xeriscape landscape design only involves the use of cacti and other succulents as well as well-placed colored rocks. Although, of course, you can landscape this way effectively, you can have a xeriscaped yard that is blooming with color and greens too! It's all a matter of careful soil preparation, wise plant selection, using clever watering techniques, and diligent upkeep. Soil Preparation for Xeriscape Landscaping:Because you will not be spoiling your plants with excess amounts of water, you must provide a bed that will allow the roots to use water more effectively. By adding mulch and other organic matter you will increase the soil's ability to retain and distribute water much better. Anywhere from 4-6 inches tilled into the existing soil is adequate. Choosing Your Plants for Drought Tolerant Landscaping:Buy locally grown, indigenous plants whose genetic makeup is already programmed for survival in arid climates. It's simply too difficult to grow eastern plants in western climes! Native grasses are a beautiful choice as are flowering shrubs, all types of perennials and ground covers. Careful selection of perennials means that you will be able to enjoy color all summer long: make sure to check with nursery professionals if you are new to growing these hardy drought tolerant plants. The most wonderful thing about perennials is that they will live to bloom again year after year after year, saving you money. Watering the Xeriscape Garden:![]() Succulent Plants in Xeriscape Landscaping

Make sure to water early in the morning to avoid unnecessary evaporation and avoid over-watering at all costs. How do you know if you're over-watering? Water will pool around plant roots and run across sidewalks. Consult with sprinkler professionals to decide what will work best for you. Upkeep and Maintence of Xeriscape Gardens:Xeriscape landscape design does not necessarily require any more upkeep than a regular flower garden, but it should receive weekly attention. Make sure to prune, fertilize, and weed often to keep your garden looking its best.
